Conditioning metal instead of sealing it under resin

Grey cast iron and untreated mild steel interact naturally with their environment. To prevent surface rust without using aggressive solvents, we recommend light seasoning with plant-based oil. This water-repellent barrier penetrates the micropores of the iron, stabilizes the surface, and develops a smooth dark patina over time that feels great in hand.

Applying the oil

First dry clean the piece with a brass brush to dislodge embedded chalk. Next, apply a few drops of polymerized linseed oil onto a clean cotton rag. Rub the surface in steady circular motions, then vigorously wipe away any excess with a second dry cloth. The metal should look satin, never tacky or sticky.

Frequency and climate-controlled storage

Repeat this oiling at every season change or whenever the metal feels dry to the touch. Store your bars and plates on stable racks, away from uninsulated damp floors, to prevent stagnant condensation.
